Accelerating Transformation of Sustainable Packaging,
Shaping a Waste Free Future

The issue of plastic waste in the environment is currently one of the most pressing global challenges. As a world-renowned food and beverages company, Nestlé has stepped up to meet this challenge. Nestlé has publicly committed that by 2025, 100% of its packaging will be recyclable or reusable, and its use of virgin plastic will be reduced by 1/3. To meet this challenge, Nestlé will focus its actions around three pillars: developing packaging for the future, helping to shape a post-consumer recycling system, and driving new behavior and understanding.
In developing packaging for the future, Nestlé is optimizing packaging materials, exploring bio-based plastics and developing plastic-free paper packaging to replace plastic-coated paper packaging, as well as developing mono-material flexible packaging. From 2018 to 2021, the percent of designed for recycling packaging at Nestlé Zone Greater China has increased by more than 10% leading to an overall rate exceeding 70%. In the same period, Nestlé Zone Greater China has reduced its virgin plastic use by 5,000 tons.
In helping to shape a post-consumer recycling system, Nestlé is continuing its focus on neutrality, collaboration and partnership, as well as advocacy. From 2020 to 2021, Nestlé Zone Greater China has neutralized over 40,000 tons of PET, PE, PP and over 2,000 tons of flexible packaging.
In driving new behavior and understanding, Nestlé is partnering with environmental NGOs and organizing volunteer activities, encouraging consumers to participate in the sustainable packaging action. Meanwhile, Single Use Plastics items have been eliminated in more than 700 offices and production sites at Nestlé Zone Greater China. In the future, Nestlé will work closely with stakeholders in the value chain to accelerate the transformation of sustainable packaging and shape a waste free future.
